AND WHEN I PRAY
Margaret Kern
AND WHEN I pray, for what should I ask?
For consolation?
No!
But that I might console;
To give, not to receive;
To love, rather, than to be loved;
To understand,
Not that I might be understood;
To pardon
Where there is offence;
To bring the Truth to those
Who live in error dense;
Faith to those who doubt;
Hope,
Where there is grim despair;
Light,
To those who dwell in darkness;
Joy,
To those who seek but happiness,
(For Joy is of the soul,
It bides eternally;
Happiness is but a fleeting thing,
Which the little self doth seek).
Harmless
To be in thought, word and deed;
To see in all,
No matter the creed or race
His wondrous Grace;
For He hath need of all
To weave the Garment Whole
Of Brotherhood.
So, on prayer intent,
Free
My soul would be
To receive His Greatest Gift,
Love Omnipotent.
