Enclosed you will find the first step in the work of arousing the consciousness of the spiritual faculties.

I have refrained from naming the article, not knowing whether it should be called a lesson or an essay. I will remember the result to myself when I first used this method; I was greatly frightened, for several faculties became awakened at the same time.

In my case, this happened in less than a week.

It was the first time I had ever tried consciously to bridge the gap between the material and the spiritual world. Before this, I had received only as I prayed, and I had known nothing of the great spiritual forces with which I am now somewhat familiar.

The next step will deal with attunement, and how to use it. If I should name the enclosed article, the name would be “Receptiveness, and How to Attain It;” but I have never had the knack of choosing headings that editors liked. So I leave it to you to do what you think best.

I hope you will like what I have written. It is so condensed that it contains only the gist of the outlines given me about three years ago from the mental plane.

WHEN we wish to build a house, a boat, a bridge, etc., we first believe that we can build it. Then we think it over, trying to picture it in our minds as we wish it to be. Then we draw a plan, a diagram, getting clearly before us the details of the structure. We make a good foundation upon which to build it; then with care, patience, and full of faith, we add bit by bit to our creation until at last it is what we wished it to be.
