The Inner Life
THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | AUGUST 1935
seem to remember anything. So I am taking him at his word, because it sounds very encouraging.”
This boy is very unusual and gives every evidence of being an old and wise soul, with a knowledge of things given to but few even today. For instance, listen to this that happened last Easter while at church, as related by his mother. After the services he said to her:
“I saw a most wonderful inner light; it seemed to come right out of my heart and spread all through the church. It was so brilliant and so beautiful that I wanted to cry, and yet I was never so happy in my life.” He was sure that everyone had seen it too. Since that time he has mentioned the “inner light” many times, and has begged me to take him back to that church again. To me that is most significant of his inner development.
“I like the time when he was six and was sledding on the hill in front of my window. He was having difficulty coming up the hill. With each step forward he would slide back two. All of a sudden he stopped, and putting his hands on his hips with his head down, he seemed to be intent on some thought. Then he stepped forward, and without a slip reached the top of the hill.
“That evening I spoke to him about it and asked why he stood still so long. He said, ‘I was talking to my mind and I told it I wanted to get me up the hill.’ I asked what he thought his mind was, and he said, ‘I’ll tell you. Let’s make believe my body is a boat—an ocean steamer, and that I own the boat. Well, the captain of the boat is my mind, and you know, mother, the captain stands on the bridge (pointing to his forehead). The engines are my legs. When the captain wants to go forward or back, he signals to the engine room. The telephone wires from the bridge to the engine rooms are my nerves. So when I want my ship to go anywhere or do anything, I have to instruct the captain what I want done. And that’s how the captain, my mind, when I order it to, directs my ship, which is my body.’ ”
Remember, he was only six years old when this happened. His mother’s letter continued:
“I liked the way he expressed the above thought to a friend of mine one night recently, while we were at dinner. She said, ‘Tommy, you are getting a cold.’ ‘Oh no I’m not,’ he quickly replied.
