The Inner Life
THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | JULY 1936
The small dog that sprang from the wayside bushes and attacked you at intervals on the path was symbolic of qualities of the animal nature that frequently spring forth and hinder your Spiritual progress. The north side of the wall that became transparent like glass and through which you could see all of the valley below was a glimpse of the astral realms beneath. The beautiful homes and scenery attracting you and causing you to descend and wander there for a while made you forget the Light that originally drew you to the top and which was now shining and calling you on to an even higher consciousness than you had attained before.
This has been the experience of many who, when they reach a high state of consciousness have to prove their ability to establish themselves therein by not being attracted or seduced by the phenomenal side of the astral world, the realm of illusion, which distracts their attention from the pure Light of Christ that originally lighted them and induced them to climb the Spiritual heights. Eventually, however, that Light again shows itself and the soul will follow it—but not until there is nothing left in the lower levels that will solicit interest or entice.

THE BURDEN OF DESPONDENCY
I WAS in a casket buried under a great deal of dirt and I knew my two little girls aged nine years and eleven years were living also in similar caskets, and as I lay there I thought, “why those children should never be there—they are alive.”
I decided I would do something about it, and while the casket was closed, almost without effort everything fell away that was on top of us. I was surprised at the something within that just released us, and a small glimmer of light began to shine down through the darkness until finally we were out.
Regarding the feeling of despondency that comes over you, you must not allow yourself to indulge in it for a moment. But when such feeling comes, immediately turn to God and see Him as your support, your strength, your supply, your sufficiency in all things, refusing to entertain any other thoughts. You need not let that feeling ever enter your mind, for by this time you know what it does to you. Surely you are master of your own mind and can do this. But you will have to do it; no one else can.
Your dream was but an illustration of this very condition you have allowed yourself to get into, how you have allowed yourself and your children to sink into and become buried under this absurd burden of despondency. It was sent to show you how easy it is to rise out of it. Go back to your dream and realize that you can free yourself from this feeling just as easily as you freed yourself and the children from the caskets buried underneath the dirt.
