THE SERPENT OF SELF
THIS dream came about a week ago early in the morning: I seemed to be standing somewhere on a very large tree. I did not see myself, but knew I was there. On one limb was a small brown bird with three eggs in her nest. She was so happy and unconscious of the serpent on a limb on the other side of the tree. I was just between them. The serpent was the black diamond kind, and the lines between the diamonds glistened like hammered silver. He seemed so satisfied with himself, and I knew there was nothing about the bird and her nest but would just destroy them when he wanted to.
I thought I must save the bird and her unawakened thoughts. But how! I had no weapon. I had the feeling of raising my hand to do something, although I did not see it; when suddenly a long streak of light went from it, not wider than the edge of a sword, and touched the serpent across the head. Without a sound his head dropped off, and the other part of his body hung down dead.
Your dream is very interesting. You were shown in this tree of your life the serpent of self on one side, and the truths waiting to be born in your consciousness on the other side. The serpent represents the lower part of your nature, that subtle enemy that is ever waiting to pounce upon the truth, if it is not watched, to prevent it from coming to life in your consciousness. For it knows that when the truth is really known (it comes like a streak of light to the mind), it means the end of the old nature—its head is severed. Therefore, dear friend, watch carefully that old serpent of self.

THE MASTER’S VOICE
I HAD such a strange dream last night, I wonder if you could throw some light on it for me?
I dreamed that there was a trap door in our home, and I had to go down once in a while and listen to a voice calling for me. I went down so many times, until finally I did hear some one calling me to follow the voice, and I passed through such a trap door, a tunnel-like path, wide there were boards on barrels and I had to pass over them. The voice kept on calling me; it was such a sweet-haunting voice, and as I ran over the barrels, the boards stopped and there was a deep opening in front of me. I said to myself, no matter what happens I must reach that voice, for it must be my Master’s voice calling me. Then I awoke, and that ended my dream.
Your dream is most interesting because it illustrates what you have to do—to go down into your subconsciousness and pass over all of the rubbish you find there in the deep opening from which comes that “sweet haunting Voice.” It is indeed the Voice of your Lord and Master—your Christ Self, that comes from deep within. But you must clear away all the rubbish in your mind and even in the subconsciousness accumulated from outer teachers, before you can clearly hear it. It is ever there, however, speaking to you, but you must seek it, must listen carefully, must want to hear it more than anything else before it sounds clearly and gets through to the outer mind.
