The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | MARCH 1936

This was a spacious room, richly furnished, and similar to the offices occupied by the chief executives of most large concerns. A medium-sized, closely-knit man, dressed in a gray business suit, was seated at his desk, dictating letters to a slip of a girl who was rapidly taking his crisp, quickly-spoken messages in shorthand.

He arose and stepping briskly around the desk extended his hand and said, “Mr. Albertus, I believe. I am Mr. Godfrey. I will be with you in a moment.” He led the way to a comfortable chair in front of a large window giving a splendid view of the lake.

In the brief moment of introduction I had noted his keen eyes, his pleasant, engaging smile, and his dynamic personality; also that the hand which I had grasped was thick and stocky with a very decided grip.

I was seated in such a way that I could not see him and the stenographer at the desk without turning, but I could hear every word that was spoken. I was wondering when and how I would meet the Master himself, when I realized Mr. Godfrey was saying, “That will be all, Miss Smith; please see that I am not disturbed until I ring for you.”

I could hear the girl shuffling her papers, and presently the door closed and I knew we were alone.

I did not turn; however I was keenly alert while I waited, thinking, “Now he will take me to meet the Master.”

But at that moment a voice entirely unlike the clipped-word tones of the business man, a voice which at once startled and thrilled me, said, “I am ready now, Blue Star!”

I arose and turned to face the speaker. But upon doing so I stood speechless. I could only gasp my astonishment. To be sure there was nothing alarming in what I saw; yet so great was my shock at the sudden transformation which had taken place, so bewildered were my senses in seeking an explanation, that I felt I must presently faint and sank weakly sat down and closed my eyes to regain my composure. For where but a moment before had been a short, stocky business man, dressed in gray, there now stood a tall, stately figure clothed in gorgeous robes and adorned with jewels; a wealth of snow-white hair fell to his shoulders and a full white beard partly concealed the most benign
