THE TEMPLE
By I. G.
IN THE Garden stood the Temple. This was the Garden of all flowers, of all fruitful trees, of all living waters; and in the midst of all stood the Temple Not Built With Hands. It was beautiful with all seemliness. And within the Temple was Light, and within the Light was One who dwelt there as his right.
But one day, when the Builder of the Temple and the Source of its Light was away, to the beautiful Temple came Doubt, and defaced its noble walls with creeping decay. And Doubt blew a cold breath upon the Light, so that the Light wavered; and the Dweller in the Light wavered.
Then to the Temple came Worry, and the earth quaked, causing the Temple to became covered with earth and rocks. And Worry put a dark hand over the Light, so that the Light grew dim; and the Dweller in the Light dwelt almost in darkness.
Then to the Temple came Fear, and caused hideous things to grow within the Temple. And Fear poured itself upon the Light, so the Light gave forth foul vapors; and the Dweller in the Temple was poisoned and sickened by them. And the Dweller in the Temple in his weakness cried out for help to the Source and Giver of the Light, help which he knew He alone could give.
Then to the Temple came the Shining One, the Builder of the Temple and the Source of its Light, bringing with Him Faith, Hope and Love.
That which Doubt had caused to deface the walls of the Temple, Faith soon removed. That which Doubt had taken away was restored by Faith.
